Video feature integration into intelligence platform

Overview

Kitman Labs is one of the world’s leading sports science and performance intelligence companies. Adding a video feature to the platform was meant to bring a more holistic approach to coaching and development.

I was a part of the team that worked on integrating a video section into Kitman intelligence platform. This story is about researching, reimagining an existing product, refining its logic, and elevating video analytics to keep up with the field standards.

Challenge

The challenge was to seamlessly incorporate a pre-existing video section into our platform while ensuring a unified and intuitive user experience. The acquired product, while promising, needed a comprehensive redesign to align with our product’s principles and functionality.

Research and discovery

User feedback analysis

To kickstart the process, we conducted interviews and gathered feedback from our sports experts. This valuable input provided insights into user expectations, preferences, and pain points related to video content consumption within the sports and performance medicine domain.

Competitive analysis

Review of competitors' platforms helped identify industry best practices, gaps in existing solutions, and potential opportunities to differentiate our offering.

Content relevance assessment

We assessed the relevance of existing feature content and updated it in terms of optimizing the user journey.
From technical perspective, video section's compatibility with our platform's infrastructure and smooth integration process was ensured by our backend development team.

Design approach

Unified design language

To align the aesthetics of the video section with our platform's design language, I applied our design system visual principles. This ensured a cohesive experience throughout the platform.

As video files may be considerably large, and the uploading process might take some time, the side panel can be minimized to ensure it does not interfere with the user's ability to carry out other tasks.

As an example, the original lengthy page dedicated to video uploads underwent a transformation into a side panel that now opens directly on the section's home page.

This modification enables users to seamlessly fill out all the necessary fields, switch on or off some notifications, without scrolling through several screens.

Logical refinement

The existing logic within the video section was fine-tuned based on user feedback and industry best practices. This resulted in more intuitive and user-friendly navigation, giving our users access to valuable content.

I proposed gathering all information into a single table, using filters to cover coaches' dual approach. This way, coaches can seamlessly transition from reviewing general club statistics to delving into individual player performance by applying filters to display total duration and percentage watched for each video assigned to a specific player.

Through user interviews, I learned that coaches use analytics to evaluate player interaction with assigned videos and to gain a comprehensive understanding of overall club engagement.
Initially, the analytics were scattered across various pages within the video feature.

Improved video analytics

Recognizing the essential role of data in coaching and development, I worked on improving the video analytics capabilities.

Additionally, this page includes storage details, which prove beneficial for users dealing with limited space. Users can promptly select videos for deletion to free up storage space.

Outcome

The integration of the video section into the platform offers users a consistent and intuitive experience. Whether accessing educational content or reviewing performance videos, users can navigate within a unified ecosystem.
The logical refinement and enhanced analytics ensure that users can engage with relevant video content and empower them to make informed decisions for better sports and performance outcomes.
